Crime Prevention

22nd April, 2011

iQ Student accommodation has excellent security measures in place with CCTV, key fob access and 24/7 on site staff presence in all our buildings. However, its better to be too safe than sorry so please see our suggestions on how you can protect yourself even further:

  • Ensure all your windows and doors are locked when you leave
  • Keep high valuable items out of sight of windows, preferably stored in a cupboard or drawer
  • Ensure the model and reference numbers of your items are stored in a separate location to your items in case of a theft.
  • Use smart water on your belongings – its an invisible genetic water which is unique to you which can be wiped onto any items to provide a traceable mark. As a rule of thumb, all property detained by the police is scanned by a UV light for traces of smart water.
  • When out and about, keep items out of site.
  • Download "Low jack" - a computer software program which can be installed onto a laptop or desktop computer. Its unique to your laptop or computer, so if its stolen the police can activate the code so when it is connected to the internet it will automatically send a signal of the IP address and location to the police. You also have the option to take a photograph of the user if you have a webcam installed.
  • Register your phone with "immobilise" – this is a government database where all mobile phone IMEI numbers are stored. If you lose your phone, or have it stolen, you can notify the database who will bar it from all networks and render the phone useless.
  • Always keep to well lit and busy areas if travelling at night or with an unusual amount of high value items, and avoid travelling alone if possible. Avoid shortcuts down alleyways or across darkened parks.
  • If you regularly travel with valuable items then vary your route
