Exploring the Art scene in East London on a student budget…it’s all about ‘First Thursdays’!

5th February, 2013

You couldn’t choose a better place to live than East London if you’re keen on the art scene. On the first Thursday of every month the galleries and museums of east London open their doors late for a chance to see amazing art, culture and events after hours.

With over 100 galleries and museums open until 9pm on ‘First Thursdays’ there will always be something free and exciting to see. Take your pick from a range of art, performance, music, pop-up bars and art tours. Explore east London's galleries, artist run spaces and studios. Visit the First Thursdays website for more details including a downloadable guide and map to see the many exhibitions and galleries you can visit. Many of the galleries are right on the doorsteps of iQ Shoreditch and iQ Hoxton, including Hoxton Gallery (12-18 Hoxton Street, N1 6NG) which is just off Old St and right next to trendsetting Hoxton Square.

If you care to venture out of Shoreditch and Hoxton, Vyner Street in Hackney is the place to go for late night culture on the First Thursday of every month. Art lovers can often be found strolling down Vyner St, beer can in hand. Art Galleries open their doors to the public so they can enjoy the eccentric exhibitions on show. The Victory pub also becomes a hot spot, with revellers often spilling out onto the street to enjoy music from the band playing outside as part of ‘First Thursdays’.As you know, we have our very own Art Studio at iQ Shoreditch Student Accommodation. For all those budding artists who have joined the iQ Shoreditch community, it can be a place to let your creative mind get to work.

Hopefully a stroll round East London’s galleries and art spaces will inspire you to create your very own work of art in the iQ Shoreditch Art Studio!
