Watch your Energy in February...

1st February, 2011

The competition is on at our student accommodation in Preston. The flat which has used the least amount of energy this month will win £40 of Dominos Vouchers.

Check out our tips below to help keep that energy usage down and win you that delicious Pizza …

Bedroom / Bathroom:
1. Close curtains at dusk to prevent heat escaping through the windows.
2. Try not to leave the tap running whilst brushing your teeth, you’d be amazed at how much water this can save.
3. Only use electrical items when you need them and try not to leave your computer switched on when not in use.

Lounge/Kitchen:
1. Cook several dishes in one session. Use all of the shelves within the oven rather then heating the oven several times.
2. Avoid opening the oven door unnecessarily - every time you do, the temperature drops by around 150C.
3. Never put warm or hot food into the fridge or freezer.
4. Boil the right amount for every cup of tea rather than filling the kettle to the brim every time.
5. Avoid accumulating gadgets unnecessarily; even hand operated ones, as around six million appliances a year end up in landfill sites.
6. Sort your laundry before ironing so that you iron delicates on a low setting first, working your way through to fabrics such as linen, which require the highest setting.
7. Choose the right size pan and use lids to retain heat and reduce cooking time.
8. Run your dishwasher on its economy setting and make sure it's full. Used this way dishwashers can use less water than washing dishes by hand.
9. Take turns cooking for your flatmates or friends rather than cooking for one.
10. Turn off your lights if you are no longer in the room.
11. Try not to keep electrical items on standby as they use just as much energy.
